Number of COVID-positive patients in area ICUs falls to 70

There were 187 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to state data; 70 of those were in intensive care units. That’s the lowest number of COVID-positive patients in ICUs reported in the past five days.
According to the Healthcare Resource Tracking System, 87% of area ICU and 90% of area acute care beds were being used.
About 21% of area ICU patients were either COVID-positive (70) or suspected of having the virus (5), as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. About 7% of area acute care patients were either COVID positive (117) or suspected of having the virus (31).
And 54 ICU and 242 acute care beds were available.
The Shelby County Health Department reported 174 new cases and five new related deaths on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 29,504 cases, including 27,577 inactive cases/recoveries and 429 deaths.
There are 1,498 reported active cases.
The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.
As of Tuesday, Sept. 15, the agency reported 175,231 coronavirus cases, including 2,127 deaths, 762 current hospitalizations and 158,660 inactive cases/recoveries.
About 2.5 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
