More than 150 ICU patients in the area are COVID-positive

More than 40% of area intensive care unit patients were either COVID-positive or suspected of having the virus, according to the latest public data available.
A total of 151 area ICU patients were COVID-positive, and nine were suspected of having the virus as of 5 p.m. Monday, according to Tennessee’s Healthcare Resource Tracking System. They represented nearly 41% of the total number of ICU patients.
About 18% of area acute care patients were either COVID-positive (338) or suspected of having the virus (53).
There were 489 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds.
According to the HRTS, 91% of area ICU beds and 92% of area acute care beds were in use. And 40 area ICU beds and 180 area acute care beds were available.
The above figures are reflective of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee; Crittenden County, Arkansas; and DeSoto County, Mississippi.
The Shelby County Health Department reported 541 new coronavirus cases and four new deaths on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
The 541 cases come from 5,302 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 10.2%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 51,775 cases, including 47,517 inactive cases (recoveries), 3,549 active cases and 709 deaths.
Tennessee’s Department of Health reports statewide coronavirus statistics at 2 p.m. daily.
As of Monday, the agency reported 408,730 coronavirus cases, including 5,009 deaths, 2,529 current hospitalizations and 362,818 inactive cases (recoveries).
About 4.7 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
