Coronavirus: Shelby County adds almost 1,000 new cases in one day
The Shelby County Health Department reported almost 1,000 new coronavirus cases and five new related deaths on Monday, Dec. 14.
The day’s numbers were the highest new coronavirus case totals since the beginning of the pandemic, with 998 new cases. Those figures came from a total of 9,229 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 10.8%.
As of Friday, the most recent data available, area hospitals had 30 ICU beds and 217 acute care beds available in total, according to the state’s Healthcare Resource Tracking System (HRTS).
Last week, the area’s COVID-19 positivity rate was 12.1%.
To date, 743 people in Shelby County have died of the virus, with 4,886 active cases ongoing.
The Tennessee Department of Health reports statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily. As of Dec. 13, Tennessee had 454,305 total cases, adding 11,352 cases Sunday statewide.
