Coronavirus: More than 33,000 vaccinated in Shelby

According to the latest available Shelby County Health Department data, 26,688 people in Shelby County have received one COVID-19 vaccine dose, while an additional 6,999 people have received both COVID-19 vaccine doses.

That totals 33,687 individuals.

The agency plans to release the information every Wednesday.

Currently, the Health Department is vaccinating phases 1a1, 1a2 and those age 75 and older at the Pipkin Building at the Mid-South Fairgrounds on an appointment-only basis. January slots are filled, but people are asked to call (901) 222-SHOT (7468) to be notified when appointments are available.

The Tennessee Department of Health reports that, as of Tuesday, 263,888 Tennesseans have received one vaccine dose, while an additional 53,210 have received both vaccine doses. (That’s 317,098 total.)

The state releases new totals on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Shelby County Health Department reported 237 new coronavirus cases and no new coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday.

Those 237 cases come from 1,477 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 16%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 78,619 cases, including 71,598 inactive cases (recoveries), 5,881 active cases and 1,140 deaths. 

There were 493 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System. 

According to the HRTS, 91% of area ICU and 88% of area acute-care beds were in use.

About 42% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (154) or suspected of having the coronavirus (5). About 18% of patients in area acute-care beds were either COVID-positive (339) or suspected of having the coronavirus (23).

And 38 area ICU and 285 area acute-care beds were available.

Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Tuesday, Tennessee’s reported coronavirus total is 689,808 cases, including 8,470 deaths, 2,647 current hospitalizations and 624,306 inactive cases (recoveries).

About 6.1 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
