Jigsaw: Turning the page with Memphis Reads
Valeria Luiselli was the latest in a series of international writers brought to the city as part of Memphis Reads, a program started by Christian Brothers University that aims to provide students and everyday Memphians a chance to hear some of today’s renowned writers talk about their work.
Memphis Reads began in 2011 as a program at CBU called Fresh Reads. The intent was to give CBU’s 300 or so incoming freshman — many of whom came from diverse, even international backgrounds — a point of commonality, program cofounder Karen Golightly said.
“We know our students come from different backgrounds,” said Golightly, the chair of the department of literature and languages at CBU. “We were trying to figure out a way where they could have something in common besides being freshmen at CBU, something they can talk about, some way they can bond.”
