Word Search: Holiday spirit (and candy) brings community together

Onlookers at the Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven on Saturday morning talked about how the parade was a nice chance to show off their community spirit, an event to shine a positive light on the vast South Memphis area.

And all that was certainly true, but if you were under the age of 12 or so, the parade had another meeting entirely: candy. Many of those in the parade — police on horses, fire trucks, floats, bands, dance groups, elected officials and more — brought bags upon bags of candy to toss to the people who lined the streets of Elvis Presley Boulevard for the annual event.

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy (wearing a gaudy Christmas tie) and Memphis Police Department Interim Chief C.J. Davis were just some of the dignitaries tossing treats.

“We have a ton of candy,” Mulroy said at the start of the parade, “and we’re gonna get rid of every single piece, I have a feeling.”

Some kids, clearly veterans at this, brought their Halloween buckets to have a place to store it all. Others jammed the sweets in their pockets or corralled a stray plastic bag.
