Jigsaw: Edey the Enforcer

In the second quarter of the Memphis Grizzlies’ 125-103 win over the Utah Jazz, point guard Ja Morant ducked around a screen and was grabbed and pulled downward by Utah guard Keyonte George.

Morant, who was still dealing with an illness that held him out on Friday, was visibly unhappy with the physical nature of the play. His frustration was all over his face.

“Bro kind of like mugged me,” Morant said.

Grizzlies’ win over Jazz makes sixth straight

But that moment — one that seemed rather insignificant in the flow of the game — set up the lasting memory from the Grizzlies’ victory on Saturday night at FedExForum.

“Zach (Edey) came over right after (the play) and said, ‘Hey, is he bothering you?’

“I told him, ‘Nah, bro.’

“And then the first technical happened, so I guess Zach thought I was lying.”

Edey, looking like a super villain in black mask to protect a banged-up nose, immediately jumped into the scuffle between Morant and George that resulted in double technical fouls for both guards. He pushed George away from Morant, separating the two players.

“He became the enforcer that he is for this team,” Morant said of Edey in the moment. “So shoutout to my big fella.”
