Jigsaw: Porchfest fosters community

When the Cooper-Young Porchfest debuted in 2021, it was such a balm for the pandemic-ridden soul, a chance for people across the city to leave their cooped-up and masked-up existences for a few hours of live music in the sunshine.

Since that first year, Porchfest has evolved into almost a miniature version of the Cooper-Young Festival. No, it’s not nearly as big, but it draws crowds in the thousands to the Midtown neighborhood to walk around in the sunshine, listen to live music and perhaps even shop for bargains at the communitywide yard sale held the same day.

“I look forward to today all year long,” said Jennifer Seidman, who along with her husband Jeff hosted two acts on her porch in the 1900 block of Oliver Avenue. “To me, Porchfest is just taking that community we have and celebrating it.”
