Jigsaw: For fans of line dancing
Held at 901 Fit Life’s new location near Highland Street and Poplar Avenue, the line dancing pop-up draws between 15 and 30 attendees each time. (Lucy Garrett/Special to The Daily Memphian)
At any given time in Memphis — on a gym floor, library meeting room or riverfront green space — you’ll find lines of people stepping, spinning and sliding in sync to the groove of Southern soul music.
For some it’s fitness. For others it’s a creative outlet. But for many line dancing has become something deeper: community, culture and a way to move through life with rhythm.
“Line dancing, one of my favorite things to say, is ancestral dance,” said Memphis-based songwriter and performer Ashley Ave. “It controls the energy, and it’s such a beautiful thing.”
Ave, known for her work in Southern soul music, is helping lead a movement that blends musical performance with community engagement. This summer she’s launching Stepping on the River, a partnership with the Memphis River Parks Partnership that will bring line dancing to Tom Lee Park on the last Wednesdays of June, July and August.
