When University of Memphis history professor Aram Goudsouzian goes to work, it’s not a pleasant experience.

That has nothing to do with his job, his colleagues in the history department or his students. Instead, it has everything to do with the condition of Mitchell Hall, the campus building that houses his office and classroom.

“It’s a building that has had just an enormous number of problems,” Goudsouzian said. “Right outside my office a couple of years ago, there was a clogged sewer and there was standing water consistently in the back hallway of our offices. And then when they cleared the drain, there was just a raw sewage that came right into the hallway and seeped into our offices, including my office.”
