Linda Hill, the art director of Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, believes that the look and feel of the space impacts patients’ emotional well-being. So, over the years, she’s spearheaded an effort to fill the campus with welcoming, kid-friendly art.

There are freestanding metal hearts between the parking garage and the outpatient center. There are paintings and sculptures in hallways and waiting rooms. There are metal trees in an interior courtyard in the cardiovascular intensive care unit. In the lobby, there is a 17-foot obelisk made of colorful mosaic pieces and topped with a statue of a child riding a giant bluebird.

Outside the main entrance is Le Bonheur Green, a nearly two-acre park that has a serenity garden with wind chimes and a labyrinth with a butterfly in the middle.

“The driver for putting art anywhere the children were going to be was to get their mind off of any fear they might have,” Hill said.
