The first phase of the $81 million, mixed-use Northside Square development formally opened Friday, Jan. 16, with two ribbons to cut.

One was for the commercial parts of the ambitious project; the other was for the residential part of the conversion of the old school at 1212 Vollintine Ave.

The opening of the common areas and the completion of the renovated building come 11 years after Northside High School closed and about a decade after the first tentative plans for a redevelopment of the circa mid-1960s structure.
