James Jin doesn’t view his attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder negatively.
Instead, he’s learned to use it to his advantage, harnessing his unwieldy mental energy and directing it toward whatever subject demands his attention.
“I started looking at ADHD as a completely different concept,” Jin said. “What if it wasn’t something that held you back? What if it was like a superpower that you had?”
It’s easy to see why Jin feels this way. After making straight As at White Station High School, he graduated fifth in a class of 468 this May, and he’ll start at Yale University in the fall.
For most of his childhood, however, he struggled in class, unable to focus, and this didn’t change until he began painting and drawing.
Art gave Jin a way to express himself, and ultimately helped him in school.
