“Initiated by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 and further championed into tradition by Black radio stalwart Dyanna Williams, June is now widely accepted among music fans and industry professionals as Black Music Month.
“In observance of the symbolic monthlong celebration, WYXR is honoring 10 Memphis music professionals at our fourth-annual DOWD Awards, named for pioneering WDIA radio jockey Nathaniel Dowd ‘Nat D.’ Williams.
“While his voice was known regionally as the first African American radio host on the first station dedicated to broadcasting Black music when he was hired in 1948, Nat D.’s legacy reaches beyond that of an on-air presenter.”
