Daily Jigsaw: Depot museum

Charles Burnett was 10 years old and on a two-day train trip to Washington when he and his mother rolled past the old Germantown train depot in 1961.

They’d driven in from Wynne, Arkansas, to catch the train at the old Central Station Downtown, and from there headed east. By the time they reached Germantown, it was late and the depot was closed, but Burnett can still pull a flash of memory from that time, a hint of what the tiny depot looked like when it was still in use.

“It was dark,” recalled Burnett, a retired physician who has lived in Germantown for decades. “I do remember seeing a building. My mother pointed out several of the depots as we traveled.”
