A line of Downtown Elementary schoolers in uniforms of navy, red, white and khaki curved around the building’s central rotunda as adults swarmed around them, readying the first day of school. 

This elementary school had an extra buzz, with dozens of staff from the district’s central office and Superintendent Roderick Richmond. 

“Good morning,” the superintendent said to students named Benjamin, De’Marious and others. He walked down the line, shaking students’ hands and glancing at nametags as they turned toward him.
