Coronavirus: Shelby County adds more than 440 cases

Shelby County added 442 new coronavirus cases as of the morning of July 3.
That puts the area’s overall total at 11,044 cases. More than 7,000 people are considered to have recovered. According to the Shelby County Health Department, 194 locals have died from the virus.
The new cases come from 3,417 tests, which would give the area a positivity rate of 12.9% for the day.
According to a written COVID task force update, the daily positivity rate continues to climb; the task force, with a team from the CDC, noted these recent transmission rates reflect increases from the past week. They are looking at what can be done now to dampen future cases.
According to that same update, an increasing proportion of the new cases continues to be seen within the Black and Hispanic populations. While Shelby County’s Hispanic population is around 7%, it’s making up about 28% of the coronavirus cases.

Dr. Manoj Jain has provided estimates for the future; he believes the county will see an average of 230 new cases daily through July, 360 in August, 500 in September, 620 in October, 670 in November and 620 in December.
The Tennessee Department of Health reports statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.
