Shelby County breaks daily records for coronavirus cases, hospitalization

Shelby County has a new high in daily coronavirus case increases.

The Shelby County Health Department reported 835 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, Nov. 17. No new COVID-related deaths were reported. 

The 835 cases come from 9,048 tests, which gives the day a positivity rate of 9.2%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 43,641 cases, including 38,754 inactive cases (recoveries), 4,274 active cases and 613 deaths.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, the Memphis-area also broke the local record for number of hospitalized COVID-positive patients.

According to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System, there were 389 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds. The previous high was 384 on July 31. 

Of the hospitalized COVID-positive patients, 100 were in intensive care units on Monday.

According to the HRTS, 89% of area ICU beds and 92% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 28% of area ICU patients were either COVID-positive (100) or suspected of having the virus (8). About 15% of area acute care patients were either COVID-positive (289) or suspected of having the virus (33).

And 47 area ICU and 204 area acute care beds were available.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Monday, the agency reported 318,888 coronavirus cases, including 3,923 deaths, 1,810 current hospitalizations and 271,864 inactive cases (recoveries).

About 4.1 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
