Coronavirus: Seven new deaths reported

On Monday, the Shelby County Health Department announced signup links and locations for those who received their first dose of coronavirus vaccine from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3 at the Sycamore View Road and Lindenwood Church sites.

Those individuals can sign up to receive their second dose at the Appling Emission Station (Jan. 27-30), Pipkin Building (Feb. 2-6) or Germantown Baptist Church (Feb. 2-6). 

In the meantime, the agency continues to administer first doses at the Pipkin Building, by appointment. The signup link for the month of January is here.

As of Jan. 23, more than 39,000 Shelby County residents have received a coronavirus vaccine dose; 30,386 have received only one dose, while another 9,099 have received both doses.

As of Jan. 21, 258,809 Tennesseans have received one coronavirus vaccine dose, according to the Tennessee Department of Health; another 89,399 have received both doses.

According to the same data, 2.29% of Shelby County residents have received only one dose and another 1.95% have received both doses. 

On Monday, the Shelby County Health Department reported 417 new coronavirus cases and seven new deaths.

That brings the county’s total to 80,770 cases, including 1,194 deaths, 74,585 inactive cases and 4,991 active cases.

Monday’s 417 newly reported cases come from 4,632 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 9%.

There were 514 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System. 

According to the HRTS, 89% of area ICU and 86% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 32% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (115) or suspected of having the coronavirus (1). About 16% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (282) or suspected of having the coronavirus (45).

And 46 area ICU and 323 area acute care beds were available.


Shelby County’s updated vaccination schedule


Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Sunday, the agency reported 708,717 total cases, including 8,859 deaths, 2,128 current hospitalizations and 654,335 inactive cases.

About 6.2 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
