Coronavirus: Hospitalizations continue to trend downward; many vaccine slots full

Area coronavirus hospitalizations continue to trend downward.
There were 317 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Monday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System.
According to the HRTS, 92% of area ICU and 89% of area acute care beds were in use.
About 24% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (84) or suspected of having the coronavirus (3). About 12% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (233) or suspected of having the coronavirus (25).
And 33 area ICU and 256 area acute care beds were available.
Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.
The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.
The Shelby County Health Department reported 206 new coronavirus cases and nine new coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday.
Those 206 cases come from 1,851 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of 11.1%.
Shelby County’s coronavirus total is now 83,235 cases, including 3,953 active cases, 77,993 recoveries and 1,289 deaths.
According to the latest Shelby County Health Department data, 62,477 vaccine doses have been administered in Shelby County to date; 47,200 people have received at least one dose and 15,277 people are fully vaccinated (have received both doses).
The Whitehaven site dates for first doses of the Pfizer vaccine have been scheduled for Feb. 5,6, 9-13 (slots are full, at time of publishing); Feb. 16-20 (slots are full) and Feb. 23-27 (slots are full).
Slots for first doses of the Pfizer vaccine at the Appling Emissions Center this week are currently filled. At some point yesterday or early Tuesday, additional openings were posted online for the second dose of Moderna, which will be administered this week at the Pipkin Building. Those slots are already filled.
Tennessee’s Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.
The state’s reported coronavirus total is now 729,187 cases including 9,753 deaths, 1,562 current hospitalizations and 685,162 inactive cases.
About 6.3 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
