Coronavirus: Local numbers rise slightly

The Shelby County Health Department reported 61 new coronavirus cases and two new coronavirus-related deaths on Wednesday.

Those 61 cases come from 1,244 tests, giving the day a positivity rate of about 5%.

Shelby County’s reported coronavirus total is now 88,214 cases, including 85,489 inactive cases (recoveries), 1,225 active cases and 1,500 deaths.

According to the latest Shelby County Health Department data, 106,802 people in Shelby County have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose; 45,705 people have received both COVID-19 vaccine doses.

And 152,507 total doses have been administered in Shelby County.

In alignment with the Tennessee Department of Health, the Shelby County Health Department will move into phase 1c of the Tennessee COVID-19 Vaccination Plan on Monday, March 8. It includes residents who are 16 years old or older with health conditions that put them at risk of serious illness from COVID-19. For all other individuals, the age eligibility remains will remain age 65 and older. People can check online or call 901-222-SHOT (7468) to find out when appointments are available.


Shelby County moving to next vaccination phase March 8


There were 206 COVID-positive patients in area hospital beds as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Tennessee Healthcare Resource Tracking System.

According to the HRTS, 93% of area ICU and 91% of area acute care beds were in use.

About 19% of patients in area ICU beds were COVID-positive (69) or suspected of having the coronavirus (0). About 6% of patients in area acute care beds were either COVID-positive (137) or suspected of having the coronavirus (27).

And 27 area ICU and 203 area acute care beds were available.

Bed capacity is calculated by subtracting beds occupied by patients, unstaffed beds and beds that are otherwise unavailable.

The capacity figures are inclusive of all hospital facilities in Shelby, Tipton and Lauderdale counties in Tennessee as well as facilities in Crittenden County, Arkansas, and DeSoto County, Mississippi.

The Tennessee Department of Health releases statewide coronavirus figures at 2 p.m. daily.

As of Tuesday, March 2, Tennessee’s reported coronavirus total is 776,337 cases, including 11,436 deaths, 884 current hospitalizations and 751,776 inactive cases (recoveries).

About 6,797,475 million coronavirus tests have been performed in Tennessee.
