As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, more than 2,000 women had indicated on Facebook that they are interested in participating in a Friday morning run to honor Eliza Fletcher, who was abducted and killed running the same route a week earlier.

The Facebook event page is titled “Let’s Finish Liza’s Run.” Danielle Heineman, a local runner, told The Daily Memphian she conceived of the event because “Eliza didn’t get to run home.”

It’s an 8.2 mile run on a path that Fletcher would often run. The run is to begin Friday, Sept. 9, at 4:20 a.m. near Central and Belvedere. Three water stops will be provided along the course. Walkers are welcome but must finish their distance by 7 a.m.

Other instructions to participants include:

  • Wear bright colors.
  • Do not come alone.
  • Respect the neighborhoods you run through as people will be sleeping.
  • No strollers.
  • No dogs.
  • No bikes.

“Our run is not sanctioned by the family and is not a fundraiser,” the event page says. “We created this run as a way to honor Liza and cope with our own feelings.”
