All 5 officers in Tyre Nichols case out on bond, court date set

All five police officers accused in the death of Tyre Nichols have posted bail less than 24 hours after being booked in Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar Ave. 

Tadarrius Bean, 24; Desmond Mills Jr., 32; and Justin Smith, 28, have each posted a $250,000 bond. Demetrius Haley and Emmitt Martin III, both 30, have posted a $350,000 bond.

They will all appear in court Feb. 17 at 9 a.m. in Shelby County Criminal Court Division 3 Judge James Jones’ courtroom.


At a somber vigil for Tyre Nichols, anger is directed toward change


Charges were filed Thursday, Jan. 26, against the five officers. Each of them were indicted on second-degree murder, acting in concert of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of official misconduct and official oppression, according to court records. 

Mills is represented by defense attorney Blake Ballin, Martin is represented by Bill Massey, and Haley is represented by Mike Stengal. The Daily Memphian is working to confirm the legal counsel for the other two officers.


Here’s what’s closing early Friday ahead of Tyre Nichols footage release


Video footage of the events leading to Nichols’ death is scheduled to be released publicly after 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.

Nichols, 29, was stopped by Memphis Police officers Jan. 7 near the intersection of Raines and Ross roads in southeast Memphis. He died on Jan. 10 from injuries sustained in the interaction.
