The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has charged a man in connection to a shooting at Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South in East Memphis.
Joel Bowman, 33, is charged with carrying a weapon on school property, reckless endangerment, criminal attempted second-degree murder, possessing a firearm during the commission or attempt to commit a dangerous felony and assault against a first responder.
Bowman is still hospitalized, according to a TBI press release.
TBI secured and served Bowman, of Stanton, with warrants on Wednesday, Aug. 2.
The investigation by TBI was requested by Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy.
On Monday, July 31, Bowman allegedly entered Margolin Hebrew Academy in East Memphis and reportedly fired his weapon outside the school.
“Though unsuccessful, agents determined Bowman fired shots in the immediate area before driving away,” the TBI release reads.
According to an affidavit, staff and contractors occupied the building. Bowman walked around the exterior of the building after attempting to gain entry. He made contact with a contractor, and after a “brief interaction,” Bowman fired two shots toward the them.
As Bowman walked back to his maroon Dodge Ram, he fired a shot into the parking lot. He got in his car and drove off and fired a fourth shot.
No injuries were reported.
Bowman travelled throughout Shelby County for the next hour until police officers spotted his vehicle parked in the 4800 block of McCrory Avenue near the Berclair area and told him to get out of the vehicle, according to the affidavit.
He exited his vehicle with a gun in his hand, and “the situation escalated,” according to TBI’s statement.
According to the affidavit, Bowman turned and pointed the gun at one of the officers.
The officer fired at him, critically injuring him. No officers were hurt.
