It’s the hottest day of the year in Memphis

Stay inside, hang out near the air conditioner and eat Popsicles if you have them.
That’s about the best advice possible for Tuesday, June 24, as this is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far, according to the National Weather Service.
While the temperature is expected to hit a nasty 95 degrees, the heat index is the real danger today. That is expected to reach 107 degrees this afternoon, topping the 105 recorded earlier this weekend for the hottest day in Memphis so far in 2025.
Memphis remains under a heat advisory that started on Saturday and is expected to continue through at least Friday, said Amber Schlessiger with the National Weather Service in Memphis.
“It’s going to get hot,” Schlessiger said, in a clear understatement.

It’s going to be so hot, in fact, that Memphis Light, Gas and Water officials are asking residents to conserve energy by raising your thermostat a few degrees if possible; turning off any unnecessary lights or electronics; postponing doing the dishes and laundry until the evening; and charging your electric cars at night instead of during the day.
“Our advice right now is to stay inside if you can, and if you have to work outside then make sure that you can find shade and then drink plenty of water because heat remains the number one killer for weather-related deaths in the United States,” Schlessiger said.
For anyone who needs to escape the heat, the Hospitality Hub at 590 Washington Ave. Downtown will be open as a cooling center from 1-7 p.m., officials said.
Transportation will be provided by MATA; requests can be made by calling 901-486-0939 during the cooling center’s hours. All are welcome. Guests will need to check in upon arrival, but IDs are not required.
While this heat will persist for the next several days, there may be some relief early next week in the form of rains, Schlessiger added, probably by Monday.
“We’ll keep those triple-digit heat indexes through the weekend but luckily it looks like we’ll start getting some rain in next week,” she said, “and that’ll probably be what really kills that heat off for us.”
