Ask the Memphian: Could parts of Memphis flood like Central Texas?
In April, the Wolf River experienced its fourth-highest crest on record in Germantown, inundating several parts of that city as well as areas of Memphis. (Courtesy Ryan Hall)
When rains hit Texas earlier this month, dumping as many as 20 inches of water in some places, the resulting flooding took more than 120 lives. At press time, at least 170 people are still missing.
Memphis also saw its fourth-wettest four-day stretch in the city’s history over this year. From April 2-5, a deluge dropped 12.37 inches. Flash flooding was rampant, streets were inundated with standing water and people’s homes and cars were flooded.
But unlike the tragedy that is still unfolding in Texas, no one died here, and no one was even seriously injured.
