More information is available on the City of Memphis winter-weather update site.

Schools

Memphis-Shelby County Schools campuses will return to school on Monday, Feb. 9.

The district has yet to say if it will pursue a state waiver or pursue make-up days.

Charter schools make their own operational decisions for winter weather.

MSCS has delayed the school-choice application window to Feb. 10.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools again delayed its school choice application, according to the website.

The application for optional and general choice transfers now opens Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m., according to the district’s website.

Officials have delayed the application window several times in the last two weeks as it has extended campus closures due to remaining icy road conditions.

More information is here.

Public school students in Arlington, Bartlett, Germantown and Lakeland returned to school Friday, Feb. 6, one day shy of a two-week closure after sleet covered the Mid-South and created several days of icy roadways with sub-freezing temperatures.

Millington Municipal Schools will remain closed due to continued hazardous conditions, Superintendent Bo Griffin said.

Collierville Schools announced it will remain closed Friday, marking the 10th day students missed for inclement weather. Icy remnants impact some campuses and smaller roads in the suburb. However, the bus lot looks better, so Germantown’s buses should not have trouble running routes for those students.

“One accident is too much for us,” Jeff Jones, assistant superintendent, said by phone. Warmer temperatures over the weekend should create significant melting. Jones assured students would return to the district’s campuses Monday.

While the districts exceeded their eight allotted days for weather, many officials said they plan to apply for waivers from the Tennessee Department of Education.

Suburban school districts have inclement-weather days built in their schedules because students are in school 30 minutes beyond the 6½ hours required by state law. While the state allows district to stockpile a maximum of 13 days, some of those are in-service for staff.

Lauren Margeson, executive administrative assistant to Superintendent Cory Uselton, announced DeSoto County Schools will return Monday, Feb. 9.

The University of MemphisRhodes College, Christian Brothers University and Southwest Tennessee Community College have reopened.

Government

Germantown

Germantown has rescheduled the meeting where it will vote on tax-increment financing for The Standard, a mixed-use development replacing Carrefour at Kirby Woods. The meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. The meeting will include time for public comment.

Trash collection

Collierville

Collierville crews began picking up trash and recycling Wednesday, but crews had to stop due to icy street conditions.

There will be no recycling this week because those trucks will be used to pick up trash. Monday and Tuesday routes will be collected Thursday. Wednesday routes will be collected Friday, and Thursday customers will have collection Saturday.

Residents are encouraged to wait a week if they can or use the transfer station at 450 E. South St. The transfer station will be open Wednesday through Saturday. It opens at noon Wednesday and is open until 4 p.m. On Thursday through Saturday, the hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Germantown

Waste Pro canceled Monday collection in Germantown after the city announced Sunday night service was planned to resume. Friday customers were supposed to be picked up Monday since they have not had trash collection since Jan. 16. Their collection was delayed by a day the week of Jan. 23, and then service did not occur Jan. 24 due to the winter weather.

Friday customers are encouraged to leave their carts at the curb and Waste Pro will work to collect them throughout the course of the week. Collection should resume Tuesday. There is a one-day delay meaning residents collection will occur the day after their normally scheduled weekday.

Only trash and recycling will be collected. Yard waste will not occur this week. With continued uncertainty around road conditions, Germantown customers are encouraged to leave their carts at the curb until collection occurs.

Cancellations

Germantown Municipal School District will reschedule its school board meeting planned for Tuesday. The district had not selected a new date as of Monday afternoon.
