The AM/DM podcast: Getting into the Spirit Halloween

By , Daily Memphian Published: October 15, 2026 6:11 AM CT

Each fall, Spirit Halloween materializes in more than 1,700 vacant retail spaces nationwide.

One day, it’s an empty storefront. The next, as if by magic, the space is filled with skeletons, spiders, scary animatronics and costumes. Lots of costumes.

After October is over, the space generally goes back to being a vacant building, the spirit of Halloween, and Spirit Halloween, forgotten until September rolls around again.

Today, commercial real estate reporter Andy Ashby is here to talk about how Spirit Halloween is able to jump-scare consumers each year with new pop-up locations.
