City combines regular and recycled garbage pickup to deal with COVID absences
City sanitation crews will begin combining regular trash pickup with the collection of recyclables starting Monday, Dec. 7, because of the toll the COVID-19 virus is taking on solid waste division crews.
The City of Memphis announced the changes Friday, Dec. 4, 2020 “to mitigate collection delays.”
The city estimates a quarter of solid waste crews have the COVID virus and are in quarantine.
While the city crews won’t separate regular garbage from recyclables until further notice, residents can continue to separate the two and drop off the recyclables themselves at one of three recycling centers provided by the city.
The sites are open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. They are:
- Mud Island Drive, by the north entrance of Mud Island River Park
- Hickory Ridge Middle School, 3910 Ridgeway Road
- Agricenter International, south of the Shelby Showplace Arena
