TVA plans to add turbines in Southwest Memphis for ‘peaking’

The Tennessee Valley Authority is planning new natural gas turbines at the Allen Combined Cycle Plant in Southwest Memphis.
The federal power provider says the grid needs the additional turbines, but environmental groups say they could burden communities already facing pollution.
TVA plans to build six aero-derivative combustion natural gas turbines at Allen. The turbines are intended to replace similar machines that TVA retired last year. The machines aren’t for everyday use but instead for “peaking” — when the grid has a lot of demand and TVA needs to supply more electricity.
