The most popular election cycle in Shelby County politics brought out a majority of the county’s 600,000 voters last year.

But the 54.5% turnout for the presidential general election was the lowest turnout for the cycle since at least 1968. That’s as far back as voter turnout records go on the Shelby County Election Commission’s website.

For those who participated in the only election cycle that consistently draws a majority of the county’s voters, the presidential campaigns that drive turnout and fuel state and local campaigns were distant presences on television and social media.
