Local officials are opening two warming centers in advance of some brutally cold temperatures that are expected to hit the Memphis area in the coming days.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, and continuing until further notice, single women and families will be able to stay at the Hospitality Hub in Downtown Memphis at 590 Washington Ave., officials said. Single men and couples will be housed a little farther east at First Baptist Church at 200 East Pkwy. N.

Those seeking shelter can call a dedicated line at the Memphis Area Transit Authority (901-297-1680) to be taken to one of the centers.

The cold temperatures are expected to hit early Sunday morning with lows in the mid-20s, National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Sniezak said. However, beginning early Monday, those temperatures will drop to 14-15 degrees with wind chill indices in the single digits. The cold weather will remain through Wednesday afternoon, Sniezak said, adding that little to no precipitation is expected.
