Some on City Council oppose renaming street after former Mayor Lee Harris

Former Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris had a section of Union Avenue in the Memphis Medical District named in his honor on his first day out of office. But the Memphis City Council resolution for the honorary name change got only four yes votes Tuesday, Sept. 1, one no vote and some vocal opposition from two council members.
Nevertheless, it passed because of a parliamentary rule, according to the council member who sponsored the resolution.
Honorary street-name changes are usually one of the more mundane items the 13-member City Council votes on regularly. They’re also usually unanimous, or at least without dissenting votes among those present.
