Lowery proposes commission have ‘direct role’ in MSCS spending
The idea of a proposed state takeover of Memphis-Shelby County Schools could change how the state’s largest school system operates.
Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery said Thursday, Jan. 30, that the commission could explore having more control over the $427 million in funding the county provides to MSCS.
“The only silver lining is that we have more people now paying attention to what is happening in our education system and also what is happening with our superintendent,” Lowery said of MSCS Superintendent Marie Feagins’ recent removal.
Lowery made the comments during a Thursday, Jan. 30, taping of the WKNO-TV show “Behind The Headlines.” The program, with fellow County Commissioner Britney Thornton, airs Feb. 7.
