Council sends residency question to voters next year
Memphis City Council members gave final approval Tuesday, April 25, to a referendum ordinance that — if approved by voters — would amend the city charter to require anyone running for council or mayor to have been a resident of the city for at least two years prior to election day. A referendum ordinance on a two-year residency requirement cleared the Memphis City Council, which left open the question of the residency requirement for this year’s race for mayor.
