TBI identifies driver who died in traffic stop with sheriff’s deputy
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has identified the driver who died after a traffic stop by a Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy Saturday morning.
The TBI identified the driver Monday as 21-year-old Jarveon Hudspeth.
Hudspeth died Saturday after an altercation with a Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy.
According to reports from the sheriff’s office and the TBI, the deputy, whose name has not yet been released, approached Hudspeth, who was in a parked car at the time.
It is not clear what made the deputy approach Hudspeth.
Hudspeth allegedly tried to leave the scene but was stopped from doing so.
He was eventually pulled out of the car after which the situation between Hudspeth and the deputy “escalated,” according to the TBI.
It is unclear what “escalated” means or what caused the escalation.
Hudspeth then got back in the car and took off. The deputy was caught in the door and was dragged around 100 yards, the TBI said.
At some point, the deputy fired one shot and struck Hudspeth, according to the TBI. He drove around a half-mile further before hitting a parked car.
Both were transported to the hospital in critical condition, but Hudspeth died on the way there.
The deputy suffered a “variety of serious injuries,” according to the TBI.
The SCSO said Monday that the deputy was still hospitalized but did not provide any additional status updates.
It referred additional questions about the investigation to the TBI.
The TBI was not immediately available for comment.
Records show that Hudspeth received a handful of driving-related misdemeanor citations last year but all of them were eventually dismissed.
