On Friday, Dec. 20, more than 150 Memphis Police officers gathered in a briefing room at the department’s Ridgeway Station.

It was Code Zero night, a saturation operation MPD conducts every few months in one of its nine precincts. The officers were preparing to descend on Hickory Hill to tackle crime in one large sweep.

“It’s cold outside. Stay warm, stay safe and should be a successful night,” a supervisor encouraged the officers before they swarmed the precinct.

A Daily Memphian reporter rode with MPD Lt. Joseph Rucker for about four hours while officers carried out the operation.
