AI-powered cameras are monitoring Downtown
Wall-to-wall screens connected to Downtown’s 63 artificial-intelligence-powered traffic cameras monitor activity in the corridor down to the types of vehicles that pass through its streets daily and how fast they are going. The city plans to add about 200 additional cameras to the area in the future. (Mark Weber/The Daily Memphian)
A new Memphis Police Department command center Downtown will be a “game changer” for the district, MPD Chief C.J. Davis said during a grand opening Thursday, April 24.
“It’s more than just a building, it’s another tool in our toolkit,” Davis said to members of the public and other local officials gathered for the ceremony.
The new command center, located at 250 Peabody Place, serves as a surveillance site of sorts, specifically for the Downtown area and similar to MPD’s existing Real-Time Crime Center.
