Memphis ‘crime family': Federal wiretaps, GPS trackers and a tattoo shop robbery
A Memphis gang used GPS, texts and FaceTime to track and coordinate the robbery of a rival gang member in 2024, but Memphis Police were alerted by federal investigators who were tracking the Young Mob gang and arrived before the crime occurred. (Mark Weber/The Daily Memphian file)
A Memphis street gang used GPS, text messages and FaceTime to track and coordinate the 2024 robbery of a rival gang member.
But it took three attempts in less than 24 hours before they robbed the intended victim and two other people. During the first two attempts, federal investigators tracking Young Mob members in real time alerted Memphis police. Officers arrived before the crimes could be carried out.
The investigation details and the gang members’ back-and-forth communications were laid out in a June memorandum filed in Memphis federal court as U.S. District Judge Sheryl Lipman prepared to sentence Young Mob member Larry Wilson.
