Bar and restaurant shootings happen every day around the country, not just in Memphis, according to one expert. But there are steps that can be taken to prevent them. 

Emmitt Martin III was facing a maximum of life in prison, but prosecutors are recommending he serve 40 years. U.S. District Judge Mark S. Norris does not have to follow that recommendation.

The unit has taken 18 cases to trial this year, resulting in 15 guilty verdicts. It’s seen an additional 12 guilty pleas from defendants.

Colby Towles, 34, was indicted on two counts, one for attempted murder and another for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer stemming from his arrest in March.

The suit was filed by the family of Deion Byrd, an inmate at the Shelby County Jail who died after being stabbed by another inmate at 201 Poplar.

“This defendant allegedly used a brazen scheme to try to defraud the Presley family of their interest in this singularly important landmark,” said Kevin Ritz, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.

During his funeral service at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Johnson, 34, was remembered as a community servant with a big heart who died fulfilling his dream.

A DeSoto County grand jury returned nearly 60 indictments this month against registered sex offenders.

The Memphis Police Department hosted a Sea of Blue event Wed., Aug. 14, for Officer Demetrice Johnson, who died following a car crash earlier this month. Johnson, 34, died Aug. 2 after a car crash with a civilian, Rantavious Johnson, 22, who also died. A second officer, Bobby Fields, was critically injured.
