Shelby County declares state of emergency in storm aftermath

Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris declared a state of emergency Tuesday afternoon, as more than 50,000 Memphis Light, Gas and Water customers remained without power. 

About a quarter of MLGW’s customers lost power after a Sunday evening storm with wind speeds upward of 80 miles per hour downed trees and power lines. 


MLGW expects boil water advisory to end tomorrow


Customers still lacking electricity can access the cooling centers from June 28 to 30 at several locations. 

  • Baker Community Center at 7942 Church St.: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Bartlett Baptist at 3465 Kirby Whitten
  • Faith Baptist Church at 3755 N. Germantown Rd.: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The City of Memphis has also opened libraries and senior centers as cooling centers. 

  • Cordova Library, 8457 Trinity Road: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
  •  Frayser Raleigh Senior Center, 3985 Egypt Central Road, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. 
  • Hollywood Library, 1530 N. Hollywood St., 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
  • Raleigh Library, 3452 Austin Peay Highway: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Some Memphis Public Libraries are staying open later than normal, as well. 


55,000 MLGW customers without power as triple-digit temperatures approach


Meal distribution will be available Wednesday at 1 p.m. for affected customers. 

  • Raleigh Library, 3452 Austin Peay Highway
  • Bert Ferguson Community Center, 8505 Trinity Road
  • Frayser-Raleigh Senior Center, 3985 Egypt Central Road
  • Cordova Community Center, 1017 N. Sanga Road

MLGW customers who currently receive SNAP can apply to replace food lost during power outages that lasted at least 12 hours.

People who need to charge mobile devices can also visit one of the following AT&T locations, according to the Shelby County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency: 

  • 4938 Poplar Ave., Memphis: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • 6267 Poplar Ave., Memphis: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 
  • 3720 Hack Cross Road, Memphis: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  
  • 2282 Union Ave., Memphis: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • 2825 N. Germantown Parkway, Memphis: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  
  • 1684 N. Germantown Parkway, Cordova: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.  
  • 5985 Stage Road, Bartlett: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.  
  • 900 West Poplar Ave., Collierville: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  
  • 115 Goodman Road W., Southaven: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • 5050 Goodman Road, Olive Branch: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • 650 West Service Road, West Memphis: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
