‘Ride for Trump’ among efforts to rally Memphis-area Republicans
One of the organizers of a weekend “Ride for Trump” motorcade in the Memphis suburbs compared the plight of Republicans in Shelby County, the most Democratic county in a majority Republican-state, to being a “red-headed stepchild.”
Adam Kelly’s reference is one some Democrats have used to describe their frustration on the other side of the partisan divide as they carry the county for Democratic candidates who, despite that, haven’t won a statewide office since 2006.
Both sides are trying to change their red and blue color-coded roles in the Nov. 5 presidential-, general-election campaign that takes in a statewide race for U.S. Senate, all 99 seats in the Tennessee House of Representatives and some state Senate seats. And they are doing it without the kind of attention the national presidential campaigns are drawing in “battleground” states where electoral votes, and therefore the outcome of the presidential race, are up for grabs.
