No mean feast: Leaders join to feed community for Thanksgiving

The smell of smoked meat filled the Midtown air as white clouds from charcoal wafted from a barbecue trailer through the parking lot of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, nearly drifting to North Bellevue Boulevard.

Brian Harris, the city’s director of youth services, used tongs Monday afternoon, Nov. 25, to pull turkey out of the smoker and place the meat in a large tub for distribution to needy families two days later. The meat will be the main dish in Thanksgiving meals distributed at 10 locations throughout the city on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Weather for Thanksgiving week, locally and across the country
Those locations include Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, Dave Wells Community Center, Greenlaw Community Center and Memphis Office of Youth Services.
The hot meals will culminate the three-day MemFeast food distribution event where volunteers will deliver food boxes to 300 families across Memphis.
“This is not just about the church,” said Harris, also a member at Mississippi Boulevard. “This is about the community.”
