As news spread of the death of Stax legend Steve Cropper on Thursday, Dec. 4, musicians and others who knew the giant took to social media to pay tribute.

Cropper, a mainstay of Stax records during its heyday and the guitarist for Booker T. and the MGs, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, in Nashville, reportedly after a recent fall. He was 84.

During his career as a guitarist, songwriter and producer, Cropper played on, wrote and produced some of the classic tracks of American soul music, a list that should make any musician green with envy.
