If Melinda Killen hadn’t been a bit impertinent that day at the long-gone Bombay Bicycle Club, if she hadn’t nudged that red-haired man she had a crush on, a tiny sliver of tranquility in a busy Midtown neighborhood might today be nothing more than another parking lot.

“I saw him at a table with some other attorneys,” Killen remembered. “And so I went up to him and said, ‘When are you going to ask me out?’”
