The art of pool checkers, or how to avoid being labeled a ‘ham’

Kim Williams stared at the checkerboard for what seemed like several minutes, then abruptly thrust his hand toward his opponent for a handshake to acknowledge his defeat.
Each still had several pieces on the checkerboard, but it was clear even to a casual observer that Alfred Barnett — “East Point” to everyone in the room — had the game won.
Williams and East Point, a native of Atlanta, joined 66 other folks this week in Memphis to take part in the American Pool Checkers Association’s national tournament, held at the Holiday Inn near the Wolfchase Galleria.
