Ahoy, Memphis! How be ye doin'? It’s Thursday, Sept. 19, International Talk Like a Pirate Day. So, pour a glass o' rum, or maybe just stick with mighty, black brew (that’s coffee in pirate speak), ‘cause it’s early, scallywags. It’s also National Meow Like a Pirate Day, so “meow-arghh” to all you cats and kittens out there.

In all seriousness, there’s another Shelby County reappraisal forum tonight at the McFarland Community Center. Here’s your chance to get those questions in to property assessor Melvin Burgess before our home values (and property taxes) likely go up next year.

And one more thing: We’re still celebrating our sixth birthday over here at The Daily Memphian, so if you’d like to give this nonprofit news organization a gift, we gladly accept donations.

On Monday, a Memphis police officer shot and killed Tremayne French in Frayser after he allegedly shot at police while running from a vehicle stolen in a carjacking. Some of the bullets from the gunfire exchange struck Cornerstone Prep Denver, an elementary charter school in Frayser. The school closed on Tuesday to give students and staff time to deal with the trauma of the shooting, and students were greeted by counselors when they returned to class on Wednesday. The Daily Memphian’s Laura Testino talked to a school leader and a parent about the incident.

The 100 N. Main redevelopment will include a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, and the design of that hotel has pushed the project timeline back to early 2028. The 100 N. Main development team talked about the hotel on Wednesday when Downtown Mobility Authority approved the property transfer of the 38-story tower.

Plus, students were detained after a school shooting threat, the Tyre Nichols trial continues and we remember the late founder of Tiger Bookstore.
