The Early Word: Grizz go west without Ja, Des; Good Fortune is back on TV
Howdy, Memphis. It’s Tuesday, Nov. 12, and the Memphis City Council will discuss a new partnership that could help Memphians living in poverty.
The Center City Revenue Finance Corp. will consider refinancing for Downtown’s South Junction apartments, and the Downtown Memphis Commission is hosting two public meetings on its new design guidelines for Downtown projects.
Over in Cordova, there’s a town hall meeting with Shelby County Commissioners Shante Avant and David Bradford to discuss changes with the county fire department’s services for the area.
Memphis Grizzlies stars Ja Morant and Desmond Bane are both sitting out with “week-to-week” injuries: Bane with an oblique strain that’s haunted him all season and Morant with a pretty rough-sounding hip injury sustained last week. But so far (knock on wood), the team hasn’t really needed their star players to win games. Our own Chris Herrington says that’s “a real tribute to full-roster depth, system and coaching.” But will it continue as the Grizz face a week of strong teams in the West? Herrington has thoughts.
Food Network host Guy Fieri is a big fan of Memphis’ Good Fortune Co. (And honestly, who isn’t?) Not only did he feature the South Main ramen shop on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” earlier this year, he’s had both owners on his game show, “Guy’s Grocery Games.” Co-owner Arturo Leighton was on the show last month, and this week, the other owner, Sarah Cai, is a contestant. The show pits four chefs against one another as they create dishes containing only certain items from the grocery store’s aisles.
Plus, the United Way gets a new CEO, Collierville may get more apartments and the Tigers give an update on Overton’s injury.
