The Early Word: Germantown gets a First, and a second freeze is on the way

Hey there, and happy National Quinoa Day! It’s Thursday, Jan. 16, and if you’ve never tried this pseudograin, today is the day. Quinoa is a “pseudograin” because it’s actually a seed, though it’s typically served like a grain. While we’re talking food, award-winning podcast The Sporkful will host a live recording at the Buckman Performing and Fine Arts Center tonight. Host Dan Pashman, who actually invented a whole new pasta shape a couple years ago, will interview Memphis restaurateur Karen Carrier on stage. 

And the No. 18 Memphis Tigers will play Temple in Philadelphia tonight. Our own Parth Upadhyaya says the Tigers need to be mindful of turnovers, and he’s got a look at a couple other things to watch.

A new brunch spot with a name that sounds like a TV news weather segment is coming to Germantown. First Watch will open its first Memphis-area location in the old Chili’s near the Trader Joe’s. The Florida-based chain offers breakfast, brunch and lunch with omelets, diner-style hash, pancakes, sandwiches and a boozy drink that tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. As for the un-restaurant-like name, it apparently has nautical origins.

We’re warming up into the 50s today and tomorrow, but don’t get too comfortable yet, Memphis. Another Arctic blast is on the way just in time for the MLK holiday, and temps will be in the teens on Monday and Tuesday. 

Plus, MATA doesn’t say no to Transpro, Crowne Plaza’s future is up in the air and the Grizzlies get a much-needed win.
