
The Early Word: Newlyweds flock to Southaven, and the ’90s are alive in CY
Here’s hoping the cards are stacked in your favor today, Memphis. It’s Thursday, March 13, and 3,000 bridge players from all over the world are here for the North American Bridge Championships. The event runs today through March 23, and even if you’ve never played bridge a day in your life, there’s a chance for you to get involved this weekend.
“[Yuki] has sacrificed everything for our country … We really love Yuki,” said Daiki Sato, who with his new wife Chisato Sato traveled more than 6,000 miles from Japan to see Memphis Grizzlies two-way player and Japanese superstar Yuki Kawamura play basketball for the Memphis Hustle — on their honeymoon. Yes, of all the places in the world, the Satos chose to celebrate their nuptials at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi.
Java Cabana is back! The bohemian Cooper-Young coffee shop, which first opened in 1992, closed last summer. But it’s opening in a new form this Saturday. New owners Harry Koniditsiotis, Shannon Merritt and Blake Marcum are hoping to bring that old 1990s coffeehouse feel back with art shows and open-mic Thursdays for music and poetry. But new coffee drinks are coming and maybe even beer. Otherlands Coffee Bar is another holdover from the 1990s, and though owner Karen Liebowitz has been operating the sole bohemian shop in the area for more than a year, she says she’s not worried.
Plus, a Frayser pastor was shot and killed, tornadoes are more deadly here and Memphis gets barbecue redemption.
